Arts in the Garden

Last weekend, as May-vember was getting ready to transition to June-uary, the weather had mercy on us for a few hours, so my daughter and I decided to venture out and visit Grand Boulevard’s contribution to North Van Arts’ 2022 edition of Arts in the Garden.

Grand Boulevard resident Cornelia Unger had opened up her garden located at 433 East 18th Street to the public for a weekend and was teamed up with a group of artists by the event’s organizers.

Please read on below for my daughter’s impressions from our visit.

The moment I walked into Cornelia’s garden, I was instantly drawn in by its beauty. Her front yard had many different kinds of lovely plants, trees and shrubs. I was extra careful where I stepped or else I might have flattened some of Cornelia’s precious shrubs! The price to see her majestic garden was only 2 dollars! Live music, a display of beautiful paintings and of course a peaceful garden to enjoy and explore on a sunny day? For only 2 dollars? Very cool indeed.

The clovers were amazingly big, unlike any I’ve ever seen. The décor around the garden was very interesting and unique too, little decorations were placed nestled in the shrubs and hung on the fences. The live music was very beautiful and suited the vibe of the garden. Vlada Mars performed many lovely pieces for us on the piano. The art work on display was created by Eva Francis, and her work was fantastic! In the backyard is where the vegetables were grown, I had recognized some from my own garden, and there were very cool trees and plants that grew and clung to the fences, I thought that looked very pleasant along with the pops of colours that the other plants and flowers provided.

Cornelia’s garden was on 18th street, which is one of my favourite streets in the neighbourhood, all the houses look so pretty and cozy and it was nice and quiet too because it was a cul-de-sac. There was also Karen Munro selling pillows and pouches with flowers pressed onto them, it was very pretty and creative. The garden visit was overall a great experience and I hope to do it again next year!!
